| Freedom Innovations Launches 'Renegade' Foot |
| |
CORONA, Calif. (March 19, 2003) - Freedom Innovations, Inc., a leading manufacturer of advanced high-quality, lower-priced prosthetics for lower-limb amputees, today introduced the "Renegade," the prosthetic industry's first foot featuring a combination of light weight, high shock absorption, greater energy return and forward stride motion. Designed for the active wearer but suitable to all amputees, the Renegade is made of strong, durable carbon fiber composite materials, weighs only 387 grams (or 13.65 ounces without the foot shell that weighs 203 grams or 7.16 oz.) and incorporates Freedom Innovations' patented "Z" shape technology. According to Richard N. Myers Jr., president and chief operating officer, "this foot is the lightest shock foot on the market, offering unmatched energy return and comfort. Our technology goes beyond the conventional shock absorption system by redirecting energy to enhance the foot's heel dynamics and propel the amputee through the gait cycle. The result is unmatched performance." He said that amputees at any speed or activity level will experience "an unprecedented smooth gait and shock absorption, higher levels of balance and safety as a result of the Renegade's parabolic rollover shape, floating heel, full-length sole plate and composite Z shock technology." He said the foot's angular design returns energy along all key areas of the leg, providing optimum cushioning of the residual limb, but also offering the wearer the highest possible level of "tibial progression" - the natural ability to achieve forward motion (walk or run) with the least amount of effort. "Achieving energy return, shock absorption and residual limb comfort previously required different prostheses for different activity levels," Myers explained. "It also meant the amputee had to wear a shock absorber extension along with the foot - an added expense. The Renegade eliminates the need for the shock absorber." Myers said initial reactions from the first amputees to wear the new foot have been enthusiastic and positive. Those who are highly active say the foot outperforms any foot currently on the market. Jeremy Burleson, world-class Paralympic pentathlete from Torrance, Calif., said the foot is "an incredible improvement in technology. You can especially feel the difference in the rollover. It is better than anything I have tried before."
Echoing Burleson is John Siciliano, Los Angeles-based actor and runner who last year won the national Above-the-Knee Half Marathon Championship: "I give the Renegade a double thumbs-up. I was on the foot for 15 minutes and right away I could tell it is extremely lightweight, yet very responsive. When I ran, the energy return was quite impressive." Priced lower than competitive products, the Renegade joins the growing line of prosthetic feet from Freedom Innovations, founded last year.
