David Reissfelder, Chief Executive Officer, has over 20 years of experience building, growing and operating in high-technology environments. His background spans multiple organizations and industries, from privately held venture-backed startups to publicly held large multinational companies. Over that time he held a number of financial and operational roles, has helped companies scale from pre-revenue to middle market size and has been involved in approximately $1 billion of capital transactions through capital raises and mergers and acquisitions. Most recently, he was Vice President & General Manager of BionX Medical Technologies, a company focused on pioneering powered prosthetics for lower limb amputees. In that role he held responsibility for all financial, operational and administrative areas and was an integral part of the acquisition of the company by Ottobock. Previously, he was Chief Financial Officer of Reveal Imaging Technologies, a manufacturer of aviation security systems using CT technology to automatically detect explosives in transport. At Reveal, he helped build the company from a startup into a global player in the aviation security market, delivering double digit annual revenue growth and profitability, until its acquisition by SAIC (NYSE: SAIC). Before joining Reveal, he worked at Ciena Corporation, a global supplier of telecommunications equipment, where he was a key contributor in the development and implementation of various aspects of the company’s international operations, which eventually included over 20 international locations in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He also worked at Omnia Communications, a venture backed telecommunications equipment manufacturer (acquired by Ciena), CBE Technologies, an IT services firm, and at Audax Group, a private equity firm. He began his career in public accounting at Pannell Kerr Forster, became a licensed CPA in Massachusetts and holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Babson College.
Maynard Carkhuff, Chairman, joined Freedom Innovations in 2005 with over 25 years of leadership in the pharmaceutical, dental and prosthetic industries. Formerly Chairman & CEO of Freedom Innovations, CEO of Ossur Prosthetics and CEO of Flex-Foot, which was acquired by Ossur in 2000. He also held senior executive positions with Allergan and Denar. Under Maynard’s leadership, Freedom has achieved exceptional financial growth and strategic expansion by attracting and motivating a results-oriented team of accomplished professionals with proven track records in the medical device market. Maynard holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, Management and Research from California State University, Los Angeles, and he attended the University of Southern California’s Graduate School of Business Administration. Current and former positions include founding board member of Pacific Enterprise Bank, board member of the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association, California Orthotic & Prosthetic Association, Southern California Biomedical Association, Clean Ones Corporation, president of Orange County’s chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth and member of the University of Irvine’s Chief Executive Roundtable.
Lee Kim, Chief Financial Officer, has experience spanning both public and private companies. Prior to joining Freedom, Lee served as Chief Financial Officer of Netlist, Inc., a manufacturer of customized, high-end memory solutions for the server and communications markets. Lee led Netlist’s initial public offering in November 2006. He has served as a Financial Leadership Partner for Tatum LLC, a national professional services firm, where he served several clients as chief financial officer on both a permanent and interim basis. Prior to Tatum, Lee was Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of Epicor Software Corporation, a publicly-traded developer of enterprise resource planning software for midmarket companies. Lee holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in accounting from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Claudia Gehrmann, General Manager, Europe, brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare industry throughout the European marketplace with a strong entrepreneurial background in start-up businesses and general management, with a special focus on sales and marketing. As a key member of executive management teams, she has been responsible for strategic planning and the development of key marketing strategies and innovative services for physicians, patients, insurers and retailers focused on disease management programs for private health insurers, dental prosthetics, refractive surgery and physiotherapy providers. Claudia is German and holds a university diploma from University of Giessen in business administration with a focus in international business, sales and marketing in combination with English and Spanish language skills.
Jeremy Mathews, Sr. Vice President, US Sales & Marketing, brings over 20 years of healthcare sales and marketing leadership to the Freedom Team. He blends senior field sales management experience with a corporate management background in marketing program development, business development outreach, and manufacturing. With his 12 plus years at PSS World Medical and McKesson, he created a sales culture that maximized visibility in the marketplace, built synergy across the product portfolio, and placed a premium on results & accountability. Most recently, he successfully led a team in the laboratory segment that was acquired by McKesson Medical Surgical. Prior to that, he managed a marketing team that delivered strategic marketing direction to the largest, most profitable segment of business valued at over $800M for PSS World Medical.
Boon Yang Teo, General Manager Asia Pacific, brings over 20 years of experience in the medical devices industry across Asia encompassing Laboratory Diagnostics, Blood Glucose Monitoring, Point of Care Testing, Blood Banking and Dialysis. He has held various senior leadership positions and comes with extensive management experience in business and organizational development for both Direct Operation and Distributor Management. Prior to joining Freedom Innovations, he was the General Manager of Gambro SEA and India with full Profit and Loss responsibility for this vast and diverse region. Teo was with Abbott Diagnostics before joining Gambro. Teo graduated with a Bachelor of Science in BioChemistry and Master in Business Administration.
Eric Ferris, Vice President, Marketing, comes to Freedom with over 15 years of marketing experience in the medical device and consumer healthcare marketplaces. Eric started his medical device career in the pharmaceutical space as a Product Manager for UCB Pharma, responsible for downstream marketing initiatives. From there, he moved into implantable devices with Allergan, where he managed both upstream and downstream marketing initiatives in the company’s Breast Aesthetics product portfolio. Eric took on a larger role in the Neurovascular space with Covidien as their Director of Global Marketing. In this global role, Eric held P&L responsibility for the marketing organization and clinical services team for the company’s $100M+ vascular access and liquid embolics product portfolio. Most recently, Eric has functioned as the Group Director of Marketing for Johnson & Johnson (Biosense Webster Division) where he was responsible for the US Commercial Marketing and Field services teams for hardware/software services. Eric manages the Marketing and Customer Service teams, as well as, direct the management of our Smart technologies products.
Karla Fosburg, Sr. Director of Human Resources, brings over 25 years of human resources management experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, healthcare and consumer packaged goods industries. Most recently she served as Vice President, Human Resources for Pacific World Cosmetics where she was responsible for strategy and execution of the global human resources function. Prior to Pacific World, she spent fifteen years in various human resource roles at Allergan providing HR leadership to multiple organizations including R&D, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, and Corporate clients. Prior to Allergan, she had national responsibility for human resources in a dynamic start up environment, where her responsibilities included managing the HR function for nine offices nationwide. Current and former positions include President of the National Human Resources Association, Board Member of the Youth Employment Services and Alumni Board Member for Chapman University. Karla received her Bachelor of Arts from Chapman University. Karla is responsible for the identification, development and implementation of Freedom Innovation’s human resource strategies in support of the organization’s global objectives. She is responsible for all aspects of human resources globally, including organization development, talent management, compensation, benefits, and learning and development.
Tom Nomura, CPO & Director of Clinical Services, comes to Freedom Innovations with over 20 years of experience practicing the trade. Following his education and certification at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Tom started his career in central fabrication and worked up to a lead technician and eventually as a practice manager. His experience as a clinician in hospital settings, independent clinics, and also for Hanger, has given him a good perspective of the unique needs within different settings. When Tom worked for Kaiser Permanente as a Regional CPO, and spent time working for the payer, he learned more of the business and reimbursement side of prosthetics. Most recently, Tom was the practice manager for a local Hanger clinic in Orange County.
Ross Wiberg, Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations, joined Freedom Innovations in 2015. Ross comes to Freedom with over 20 years of manufacturing leadership and lean manufacturing implementation. Ross spent 15 years working various functional leadership positions in the automotive industry at Autoliv ANA and in the aerospace industry at ATK and ITT Exelis. Ross’ background includes a heavy emphasis on continuous improvement and he holds a six sigma black belt. During his time at Autoliv ANA, he worked as a green belt guiding the plant leadership and facilitating continuous improvement training for all functional departments at every level of the organization. As a Continuous Improvement Specialist, he was also a member of the Autoliv Lean Consulting group and specialized in helping outside organizations develop strategic deployment, lean management practices, and quality improvement programs. Ross later transitioned to the aerospace industry as a Continuous Improvement Manager at ATK and helped develop a continuous improvement program for multiple sites and grow a continuous improvement organization. Later, Ross joined ITT Exelis as the Sr. Manager of Continuous Improvement for Aerostructures and later became the Sr. Manager of Operations overseeing all aspects of operations and cross-functional management. In addition to his six sigma and lean certifications, Ross also holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.
Dan McCusker, Vice President of Research and Development, has over 24 years of Research & Development experience in the medical device field. Dan began his career with Johnson & Johnson in the knee and hip replacement field. He then transitioned to the neurosurgery space with Codman Neurosurgery (a Johnson & Johnson Company) where he eventually became the Director of Research & Development for a multimillion-dollar product line. In his role as Director, he managed a team of twenty engineers whose focus was the design and development of implants and instruments for the treatment of traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, and shunts for the treatment of hydrocephalus. Dan received his Masters of Engineering Degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He currently holds nine United States patents, twenty-seven patents worldwide, and is a Six Sigma blackbelt.
